Who is your favourite
rock and roll lead singer?
Fair or not, it’s the person at the front of the stage who gets most of the attention. It’s a truth that has destroyed more than its fair share of great bands (it’s easy to imagine that Van Halen would have been a lot more stable if Eddie sang as well as he played guitar). How many people do you know would be surprised to know that Blondie was the actual name of the band and not just the stage name of Debbie Harry? Or that there was a time when Alice Cooper wasn’t just Vince Furnier, but also the whole group playing with him?
Sometimes, though, that attention is really deserved and certain bands simply would not make sense without their specific vocalists at the lead. Which begs the question, who do you think is the best and most important front-man/woman in all of rock and roll–the one performer who blows all the others out of the water.
I have my answer, but I’m saving that post for a future date.
I’m voting for Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher and Brian Johnson from AC/DC – with honourable mentions to Bon Scott, and another mention for Jake Burns (SLF)
I would say top choice for a REAL rock n roller would be Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead fame.He is 68 and still rockin`hard. As far as 2nd and 3rd choices,i would say Joan Jett and singer Jake Burns of 80ties,Belfast streetrock band,Stiff Little Fingers. The common greatness of all these 3 singers i just mentioned are their harsh, kickass and gravelly vox. I can`t believe some of the uttter garbage people consider rock.BTW,Nyssa hippymusic is NOT ROCK!! It is ripped-off,talentless,boring bullshit….and to those that mentioned the Pixies and Stone Temple Pilots,GTFOH w/dat bullshit.Thats wussy pop bullshit for morons that will buy up… Read more »
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
This is really hard.
I’d say…..
A Wilson sister (From Heart, not Wilson Phillips, just to be clear)
Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock and Roll. She started her career as the a featured singer in Ike Turner’s King of Rhythm. She then moved on to be the lead singer of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue where she scored hits with Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits and River Deep – Mountain High. Once divorced from Ike she had a very successful solo career that dominated the 80’s.
I can’t decide between my 2 favorites, so I’ll say them both: Ozzy Osbourne & Jerry Garcia.
1)Shirley Manson – Garbage
2) Joan Jett – Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
3)Debbie Harry – Blondie
4)Kurt Cobain – Nirvana
5)Chris Cornell – Soundgarden
6)Bradley Nowell – Sublime
7)Scott Weiland – Stone Temple Pilots
And I know she’s not the lead, but The Pixies is not really the Pixies without Kim Deal…
I definitely agree with you about Kim.
I can’t summon up sufficient interest in their new stuff without her and that’s saying something because PIXIES 🙁
