Who’s your favourite
fictional couple?
Film, Literature and TV is full of perfect couples of all ages, shapes, configurations and sizes. From the co-dependent boozy charm of Nick & Nora Charles to the constant pumpatude of SNL’s Hanz & Franz, these relationships–romantic or otherwise–provide us with examples to either model or refute. I can think of a long list of partnerships that have moved and entertained me over the years, but if I had to pick the one I most want to someday emulate I would have to go with Emily & Bob Hartley of The Bob Newhart Show:
Some might accuse the show’s creators of indulging in the cliche of pairing a relatively unattractive lead actor with an out-of-his-league knockout, but what made the show and it’s lead couple so special was that there was never a moment where their relationship seemed fantastic or contrived. The chemistry between Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette was so obvious and apparent that it transcended the facts of their relative photogeneity.
Emily was the smarter of the two (as proved in the episode where they both apply to a Mensa-like group and only she passes the test and is accepted), but unlike so many other TV couples, she never treated him with a sense of exasperated weariness. Unlike other sitcom couples you always understood why they were together and why they loved each other. They lived in a crazy world, but remained sane because they had each other.
What fictional couple have you always admired? Do you think what makes them special is actually achievable or is it a bond that can probably only exist in our imaginations?
