In hectic times, it’s hard to step back from all the political refuse and actually ask yourself, What the hell is going on? It can’t hurt to get an outsider’s view. With this in mind, Evan Osnos of The New Yorker reported back from China about what the Asian power thinks of our midterm elections.
Christine O’Donnell made waves on Chinese shores after her comments about China’s “strategic plan to take over America.” While she won a few admirers in the Far East, most consider her as ridiculous as we do. The Beijing News said that she dressed like an office worker at her nomination party, but that her speech made her sound like “the head of a guerrilla army on the eve of revolution.”
They’re no fans of the Tea Party either. China National Radio compared it to the other anti-war organizations that spot America’s past. They expect support to dwindle as the economy gets back on track, saying, “When that day comes, we will realize that the Tea Party movement had pushed forward some rather insignificant figures in the world of American politics.”
While the press dismisses the extremists, Chinese paper Southern Daily painted a rather distressing picture of America—a country that doesn’t know what it wants:
[T]hey want to build more railroads, train stations, and schools, they want to use clean energy, but they don’t want to pay higher taxes in order to do all of these. They are the offspring of immigrants and feel very proud of that, and yet they also oppose the idea of immigration.
