This project has been kept tightly under wraps at SONY for quite a while. This teaser trailer is full of Tom Hardy’s brooding Eddie Brock and tons of reaction shots but fails to give us the goods.
VENOM is wisely being recast as an Anti-Hero, bypassing his comic origin as SpiderMan arch nemesis and will “spawn” an entire new Comic Book Movie franchise.
I hope the temptation for SONY/MARVEL to go “Full Monty” remains as restrained as it was in this trailer. The reason is simple. The longer fanboys have to pick apart the monster. The less impact an audience has when it’s finally revealed. I want to be shocked. It looks to be more Sci-Fi /Horror genre than straight up CBM. It’s the reason many fans, (including myself) suspected the underrated Sci-Fi Horror Film LIFE was a secret prequel to a VENOM film.
The unseen monster is scarier. CLOVERFIELD is the perfect example. It’s a tough balancing act to be sure. But once you show your hand it’s impossible to unsee. I for one don’t want to see Brocks full-on, reportedly torturing metamorphoses until I’m in the theater.

If you’re an ALL THINGS GEEK regular reader, you know how I’m anticipating #blackpanther. An interview about an article I wrote “UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK PANTHER” is online now and will be featured in this Sundays print version of the Houston Chronicle titled “Fans are pumped for ‘Black Panther’ superhero movie with a largely African-American cast”
By Cary Darling
If you want more insight as to why Black Panther is more movement than a movie for millions of African-Americans? I HIGHLY recommend reading it and I appreciate Brother Cary for reaching out to me for my opinions!
