Alice Through the Looking Glass finds the Hatter crazier than usual and only Alice can save him
I really liked the Alice in Wonderland movie that Tim Burton directed in 2010. It had a stellar cast, amazing special effects and told a tale of a darker, scarier Wonderland that had not been seen before. The movie made a ton of money so naturally plans were made for a sequel. Six years later we have Alice Through the Looking Glass. I was able to see it this week and here is what I thought of it.
Here is the plot for Alice Through the Looking Glass:
“After slipping through a mirror, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself back in Underland with the White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Her friends tell her that the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is depressed over the death of his family. Hoping to save his loved ones, Alice steals the Chronosphere from Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) to travel into the past. On this quest she may learn how to not only solve the problem with the Hatter but her own in London as well, if she can find a way to fix things before it is too late.”
I didn’t hate Alice Through the Looking Glass yet I didn’t love it either. It has the same great cast together again to deliver another story about Underland even though things have changed much since the last time Alice visited. The special effects are actually better than the first film and really make the colors bright and dark pop right off of the screen. Yet it does have some issues. Even though this is not a bad sequel, it is not the movie that the trailers tell you it is. The plot, many of the characters and even the villain are not who they may appear to be. This is not a bad thing, but it did surprise me because it felt like I was watching a different film than I expected to be seeing. The characters who seem to have a big role in this movie really don’t and those who appear to be there for a small cameo actually may have a bigger part to play in the whole thing. I am not saying this was an awful thing but it did bother me a bit. I was lucky to see this movie in 3D and I have to say it is one of the first movies in a long time that utilized this in a way that helped make the viewing experience much better. Overall it is not a bad sequel but is definitely one that not everyone will enjoy. You can learn more about this film on its website.
Alice Through the Looking Glass gets 6.5/10. It has some good things going for it and a few surprises that make it a fun journey although the ending was pretty easy to see coming. There are some very visually stunning scenes that will take your breath away but overall the plot is not the best. It has some great moments but others that only drag the film down. It is a film some people will like yet others may find disappointing. It has plenty of dark moments so therefore may not be fit for young children to watch.
For those who want to see a visually stunning movie this is the one to pick. If you really liked Alice in Wonderland you may like this film. Alice Through the Looking Glass comes out this Friday. You can follow Alice Through the Looking Glass on Facebook and Twitter.
