This year’s latest effort comes courtesy of Lionsgate, which released American Assassin last week. Despite opening against the hotly anticipated It remake and the mind-bending Jennifer Lawrence thriller Mother!, Assassin held its own on social media, with sentiments such as “amazing.” Rotten Tomatoes, on the other hand, humbly disagrees. The site’s “Critics Consensus” calls the movie “an action thriller that’s neither particularly thrilling nor intelligent enough to handle its own political subtext….” Although Social gives it a 67 percent positive score, the film could only scrape up 34 percent positives when it came to the review aggregator. Other critics drew attention to the performances of stars Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton, with the Seattle Times saying that despite an intense performance, O’Brien could never fill James Bond’s custom-made shoes. –Hugo Guzman
