Los Angeles punk act Bad Religion dropped “The Kids Are Alt-Right,” their first single in five years, while bands like Pussy Riot and Green Day both released songs directly attacking President Donald Trump after his election. Now, Green Day is seeing success with a much older song, thanks to a social media campaign to push 2004’s “American Idiot” to the top of the British music charts ahead of Trump’s trip to London. Facebook’s “Get American Idiot to No.1 for Trump’s UK Visit” page boasts more than 23,000 followers, and the song ranked No. 18 on Wednesday night, according to the Official Singles Chart Update Top 100. Chart campaigns are common in England, with jams like Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” and themes from Star Wars and Pokemon often ranking high during Christmas season when music fans push back against the onslaught of holiday tunes. The song is certainly good at getting across the British public’s ire at the American President. The conversation around the campaign sees 93 percent negatives, with many using the opportunity to call on Trump to resign. –Hugo Guzman
