The talent contest that debuted in 2002 and ran until 2016 spent two years in limbo before ABC launched a revival. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan joined as judges, and with former host Ryan Seacrest returning, the 16th season of Idol premiered on Sunday. Some 10.5 million people tuned in to watch the judges either hand winners tickets to Hollywood or send the teary-eyed packing. Most viewers had a positive take on the reboot, at least according to social media, where American Idol gets 69 percent positive sentiment. But it has serious competition that is likely to be even more ferocious than the rivalries bound to spring up as the contest gets under way. NBC’s The Voice beat American Idol on Monday night, bringing in 11.7 million viewers according to TV by the Numbers. –Hugo Guzman
