Author Tom Clancy Dies

Tom Clancy

Writer’s work became a multimedia phenomenon.

Author Tom Clancy, whose multimillion selling military and spy thrillers transcended publishing and became popular movies, video games, and even board games, died yesterday in Baltimore. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Clancy was a seemingly instant phenomenon when his debut novel, The Hunt For Red October, hit the shelves in 1984. Readers took to his keen eye for technical detail and the heroics of CIA analyst Jack Ryan, Clancy’s beloved protagonist. By the end of the decade the author owned the bestseller lists: 1989’s Clear and Present Danger is the best selling book of the eighties. His next novel, Command Authority, will be published in December

Video game company Ubisoft has published dozens of titles under Clancy’s name. The next, Tom Clancy’s The Division, is due in 2014.
