Bad Santa 2 is a sequel that will make some people laugh until it hurts
I really liked Bad Santa. The film is naturally kind of raunchy but mixes in some genuine heart. The main character is more than what he seems and once the film ends he is a different person. This film did very well and has made a lot of money so naturally they decided to make a sequel. I was able to see Bad Santa 2 this week and here is what I thought of it.
Here is the plot for Bad Santa 2:
Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) teams up with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is chubby and cheery Thurman Merman, a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke (Kathy Bates), who raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior.
Bad Santa 2 was okay, but I had a few issues with it. Most of the humor was too over the top for me. It was nice to see Brett Kelly reprise his role again. Even though his character is older and weirder somehow he still finds a way to be the moral center for Willie. Kathy Bates tries to be funny but most of the time her jokes just fall flat. Even though there are a lot of raunchy jokes this is still not a bad film. It just is not as good as the first film and it certainly won’t be for everyone. Bad Santa 2 gets 5/10. It is missing too many of the things that made the first film great. It was a sequel that didn’t necessarily have to be made but some people will enjoy it. If you like this kind of humor then you may want to check this film out. It is definitely not a film for kids though.
