The other man of the season is the subject of a new PBS documentary.
Every year you hear him. Love it or hate it, you can’t escape. White Christmas, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, Let It Snow, there aren’t very many carols that we don’t associate with this song-and-dance man’s voice.
He’s been the voice of the season for three generations. He was a movie star, singer, performer. He was also a husband, father, and entertainer who was, in many ways, overshadowed by himself. Who remembers his jazz collaborations with Louis Armstrong or his comedy with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra?
And who would imagine him as a hard-drinking guy who loved to hunt and fish and play baseball?
NPR’s Weekend Edition interviewed Bing Crosby’s widow and daughter in conjunction with the release of a new PBS documentary, American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered.
Director Robert Trachtenburg worked with the Bing Crosby estate to bring audio recordings and images to the public for the first time, showing us that he was more than a voice in a speaker and later, the star of a tell-all book.
American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered premiered on PBS Tuesday, December 2nd.
