Blair Witch comes with shaky cameras, bad characters and a dismal plot
Found footage movies became popular with The Blair Witch Project when it came out in 1999. Since then there have been many films like this but none as well known or as popular as this movie. There was a sequel named Book of Shadows that came out one year later but it was everything that the original was against so naturally it didn’t do that well in theaters. Tomorrow a sequel is coming out simply called Blair Witch. I was able to see it this week and here is what I thought of it.
You can read the plot of Blair Witch here:
College students enter the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to see if the disappearance of James’ sister is connected to the Blair Witch. As night falls, the students realize the legend is all too real after they are visited by a menacing presence.
I really didn’t like Blair Witch. It is really slow for the first few acts and takes a good while to get off the ground. The cast does their best but there isn’t much they can do to make this film that good. The special effects are cheap pretty much the whole film until the final act, but this is not a bad thing. Blair Witch is also not scary at all. I don’t think I heard anyone jump out of their seats or scream once.
What really turned me off on this film though is the go pro camera. It made me feel queasy pretty much all the way through and it only got worse as the film went along. This film is also painfully predictable. There are only a few surprises here and they are not that amazing. The only thing I liked about this film was the final act. Overall this was a terrible movie that no one should go and see this weekend. If you want to learn more about Blair Witch you can click on this website.
Blair Witch deserves 2/10. There was too much wrong with this movie for it to get any kind of higher rating. I was not only motion sick most of the film but I was also really bored. I was rarely surprised by what happened on screen and the characters are too one dimensional. It is a shame they made such a bad sequel, with a little more work on their parts this could have been really good. Best to save your money and miss this one entirely.
Blair Witch comes out this Friday. You can follow Blair Witch on Facebook and Twitter.
