Bob Dylan’s Surprise Viral Hit

Bob Dylan

Dylan’s 50 year old hit wins the internet.

Don’t tell me you saw this one coming: Bob Dylan, viral video sensation. The voice of his  generation’s clever interactive video clip for 1965’s “Like a Rolling Stone” debuted yesterday on Dylan’s web page, and Bob was immediately the buzz.

So how did a 72 year old folkie appeal to an audience obsessed with what the fox says? By sticking his signature song into the mouths of various actors on 16 different “stations,” all in sync. Viewers can flip from station to station, watching parodies of home shopping hosts, History Channel droners, Rom-Com characters, etc. lip syncing “you used to laugh about everybody who was hanging out.” And when you flip stations the song never misses a beat.

The idea is smart, funny, and provocative—just like Bob—and is more engaging than the best Google logo you’ve ever gotten sucked into. Is it a commentary on consumerism? A repudiation of McLuhan? Damned good marketing?
