A prodigal son wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps and with the right trainer he may become a champion
The Rocky movies are a very well made series, well most of them anyway. It follows a simple man who ends up becoming a champion beyond all odds. A total of six movies were made and each one had the same plot pretty much. Rocky would have to go up against a dangerous fighter and somehow he always found a way to win. But honestly Rocky is not as young as he used to be so it is high time that someone else took his place in this series. Creed attempts to fill this void and here is what this writer thought of it.
Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) is a simple man who lives in a nice neighborhood and has a great job but there is a problem. This is not what he wants to do with his life. He wants to be a professional boxer but has no idea how to reach this goal. He is a good fighter in a foreign land and is undefeated. He moves to Philadelphia so he can start to build his own life and make his own way in this world. One night he stumbles into a small Italian restaurant and inquires about a fight between Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). He asks about it and says he needs help to become a champion. This legend agrees after some apprehension to help him out and an unlikely bond is formed. But with Adonis getting ready to fight the world champion in his class his odds of success don’t look that good. How is he going to train to become a great fighter? Does he stand a chance against winning this fight? And what hardships may he have to deal with along the way?
This is a well made spin off. The characters have a connection to the past movies but the universe is an extension of this story, not a continuation. There are a number of great surprises along the way and the lessons here are powerful. The soundtrack is wonderful and Michael B. Jordan is a perfect fit for Adonis. As a fan of the past movies this one took me back there but also gave insight to what has happened since we last saw this world. Much has changed but this is a part of life. This film shows though that if you trust someone else to help you out the barriers in the way of your goals become weaker and may end up breaking away entirely.
This movie gets 9/10. There is a number of things for the older fans but there are a few new elements that will make the younger generation interested in this movie. This was a film that this writer had a blast watching and men need to see, they will be glad they did.
If you like boxing films then you need to see this one. If you were a fan of the Rocky movies this is a picture you will want to see. Creed comes out November 25,2015.
