It’s the end of an era for late night talk shows, as the last of the reigning kings steps down.
Famed late night host David Letterman announced on Thursday (April 3, 2014) his plans to retire in 2015. His show, The Late Show with David Letterman, has been on CBS since 1992. Before his stint with CBS, the talk show legend hosted NBC’s Late Night.
In his own words, “The man who owns this network, Leslie Moonves, he and I have had a relationship for years and years and years… and I phoned him just before the program, and I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring.’”
Adding fodder to the sad announcement, Moonves said, “When Dave decided on a one-year extension for his most recent contract, we knew this day was getting closer, but that doesn’t make the moment any less poignant for us… There is only one David Letterman. His greatness will always be remembered here, and he will certainly sit among the pantheon of this business.” Although this will be hard news to swallow for longtime fans, perhaps the time is right. After years and years of late nights, Letterman deserves to rest.
Fans around the world will surely toast Letterman’s sterling career, and we all hope the man can finally catch some shut eye. Here’s do you, Dave, thanks for keeping us night owls company all these years.
