‘Grandfathered’ A Middle Aged Man Gets the Surprise of His Life

Grandfathered 5 change

One bit of news can take your life and turn it upside down

Fox has a number of good shows coming out this Fall, and a few bad ones too. But the one that looks the best to this writer is Grandfathered. It stars John Stamos in a role he has no played before. It is nothing like Uncle Jessie on Full House and should be a triumphant return to television after so many years away. If you like comedy shows that make you think and pull your heart strings a bit this is a show you will want to check out.

Jimmy Martino (John Stamos) is a successful middle aged restaurant owner. He lives in a beautiful penthouse and enjoys his life. He has one of the hottest restaurants in town and loves to say to all of his guests that all he has ever wanted is a family of his own. Of course he doesn’t mean this, but one day he gets a huge surprise. A man named Gerald (Josh Peck) visits Jimmy’s restaurant and tells him he is his son. This is a huge shock to Jimmy and he has no idea what to do. But that is not enough, Jimmy gets a second surprise pretty much right after this one when Gerald tells Jimmy he also has a granddaughter. This shakes Jimmy to his core and he has no idea how to react.

Jimmy goes to talk to Gerald’s mom Sara (Paget Brewster) who Jimmy was with many years ago and has to ask why did she never tell him he had a son? On one hand Jimmy has not been against being a dad, but on the other hand he really wishes this wasn’t true. There are so many questions running through his head. Does he really want to be a dad? Is he ready to be a good grandpa? And just how much will this change his carefree life?

This is not your average TV show. The cast works perfectly together and have made something magical. The cameos bring some clever moments but the one who holds it all together is John Stamos. He brings a degree of natural fear and heart that has created a worthwhile show. Nothing Jimmy goes through comes off as fake and yet he also handles it as well as is expected. It is a moment that men rarely have to deal with like this, but if they did this writer doubts few would handle it so well. The pilot ends on a good cliffhanger that is sure to make fans want to tune in each week to see what happens next.

This show deserves 9/10. There is a lot of comedic moments mixed in with some serious scenes. The sets are beautiful and the cast big and small really have made a stellar TV show. It is sure to be one of the better shows to air this Fall on Fox. Check out the premiere Tuesday September 29 at 8pm.

If you are a man who enjoys though provoking comedy this is a show you will want to watch. It is also a fun new show to watch with your significant other on a Tuesday night. There is little bad to be said about this show and has the possibility to do wonderful this coming fall season.
