Elton John is an icon. He has had hits in four different decades, and constantly reinvents himself, while still remaining true to his artistic roots. Read on to learn some deep cut secrets about Elton John!
His Given Name
While it isn’t terribly surprising that Elton John is a stage name, the origins of it are touching, and it bears a humorous link to his birth name. Elton John was born Reginald Keith Dwight.
After a pre-fame Elton toured with a group called Bluesology, he was hired as a songwriter and paired with Bernie Taupin. When Elton and Bernie decided to collaborate on a whole album together, Reginald Dwight adopted the first names of two of his former bandmates.
After adding the middle name Hercules and legally changing his name in 1972, Elton John became a man who had gone through six names, and all of them were typically first names.
The Glasses Were Fakes
Elton is famously known for his glasses. The only Brit with round glasses more recognizable is (arguably) Harry Potter.
That may make it a little shocking that early on, Elton did not need vision correction. He found some frames with dummy lenses and decided he liked the look, so he incorporated the glasses into his stage persona.
He Doesn’t Have his EGOT, but he’s Close
Elton has won Grammys, Tonys, and Oscars several times over in each category, but he has never won an Emmy. That is the only thing left for him to have the rare honor of being an EGOT winner.
Since Emmys are given for TV, and Elton is not known for TV appearances, he might just have to settle for being a two-time Oscar winner.
He Has Been Married Twice (Once to a Woman)
Elton John is famously gay. What might surprise millennials and younger, is that he didn’t always identify publicly as being gay. It may not have surprised anyone who saw the costumes he wore on stage in the 70s which make him a bit of a gay icon. Initially, Elton identified as bisexual, having come out in a 1976 Time magazine interview. After his marriage in 1984, he said he felt he was living a lie, and filed for divorce in 1988.
Elton has 2 Kids
Elton has been with his husband, David Furnish, since 1993, and they were married in 2014, as soon as gay marriage was allowed in Britain. They have two sons, born in 2010 and 2013 via surrogate. Elton is also the godfather to many famous children, including Sean Lennon and David and Victoria Beckham’s two sons.
Elton Names his Pianos
All of Elton’s pianos are named, and not just any names. He specifically chooses female jazz singers. Over the years, he has had pianos named after Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, and more. Since Elton is more closely associated with the piano than any other modern act (with the possible exception of Billy Joel), it makes sense that he would form a close attachment to his pianos.
Elton Writes His Songs in Minutes
Elton John songs often end up being some of the most praised in all of music, but they only take him a few minutes to write. Typically, Bernie Taupin will write lyrics, then send them to Elton. Elton then will figure out the tune that goes with the lyrics he receives. He has said his part in this process takes him fifteen to twenty minutes typically.
Elton John is one of those artists everyone knows. Between his huge catalog, his AIDS activism, and his quirky personality, he is definitely memorable. Hopefully, now you know just a little bit more about Elton John!
