A year ago today: I voted, wrote, went to a friend’s party. It ended early. You may have had a similar experience. I’m as concerned for our country as the next guy, but today, as every pundit with a soap box weighs in, I think it’s better for me to look ahead to the holidays… and light a candle.
The fireplace was two apartments ago. In its absence, we burn candles during holiday season that take us back to the time when we perfumed our city living room with the smell of the country.
The Thymes Frasier Fir candle in a dark green glass is our first choice. It doesn’t quite convince you that there’s a fir tree in the corner, but it proposes the idea. The smell is of “crisp Siberian Fir needles, heartening cedar wood and relaxing sandalwood.” In simple English, this candle defines fresh.
This 6.5 ounce candle will burn for 35-40 hours. A veteran fan offers some shrewd, money-saving advice: “The trick is to only burn it for 15-20 minutes and then blow it out. The scent will linger all night, and you save the candle.” [To buy this candle for $32 from Amazion, click here.]
Thymes also sells a Frasier Fir 3 Wick Candle. 17 ounces. $50. [To buy it from Amazon, click here.]
Or consider Diptyque candles, which are light years from the Sierras. “Baies” blends black-currant leaves and Bulgarian roses. Only slightly less exotic: lavender. To read my praise for Diptyque, click here.
