“The Intern” Delivers Laughs and More

A little laughter and a few good friends go a long way.

I was drawn to the movie The Intern because I thought it would be the perfect feel good Saturday night comedy. I was in the mood for something with laughs and a happy ending. The leading actors, Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, also caught my attention. I don’t think I’ve ever seen either one in a movie I did not enjoy. This one did not disappoint.

The movie begins with bored and lonely Ben, played by Robert De Niro, coping with retirement after the loss of his wife. He finds a flyer about a company looking for senior interns and decides to go after the opportunity. This pursuit would turn out to be life changing for him in ways he could not have foreshadowed.

Anne Hathaway’s character, Jules, is a work-obsessed thirtysomething CEO facing interpersonal issues at home. The movie centers around the relationship between Ben and Jules, but also has a few subplots and other character interactions that lead to further enjoyment and humor.

Ultimately, the range of emotions and human experiences portrayed in this movie appeal to a wide variety of people as we’ve all experienced loneliness and uncertainty in our lives. It was nice to see these emotions dealt with within a humorous and tender framework.

In addition to De Niro and Hathaway’s perfect performances, I was pleasantly surprised to see Rene Russo in an important role. The rest of the cast also seemed well suited for their parts. All of the characters executed their roles eloquently and helped the movie attain a complementary blend of humor and melodrama. Even the silliest scenes delivered the sought after smiles and laughs.

Watching Robert De Niro make his way through retirement pulled at my heartstrings and led me to think about all the people who can relate to his situation. It also made me wonder if I would be in a similar one someday. I watched the dynamics between Hathaway and De Niro unfold hoping they would not go down a predictable and overplayed path. There were a few suspenseful moments when I wasn’t sure how their relationship would play out. Ultimately, the range of emotions and human experiences portrayed in this movie appeal to a wide variety of people as we’ve all experienced loneliness and uncertainty in our lives. It was nice to see these emotions dealt with within a humorous and tender framework.

The movie is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and brief strong language, but it is family friendly in my opinion. The biggest issue with taking younger children to this movie may be losing their interest. Older children will probably follow along and get a few laughs. I would give this movie 8.5/10. This is not because it’s some epic, thought-provoking blockbuster, but because it met my expectations and then some. I was expecting a simple, lighthearted comedy. The movie fulfilled this promise and also had unexpected dramatic elements that were touching and relatable. It appeals to the emotions and reminds us all that handling our range of human experiences with a little humor and a few good people goes a long way.
