A film that shows people how an amazing true tale shaped the groundwork for a literary classic
Many people have heard of the story Moby Dick. This writer is sure there are a good number of people who have even read it cover to cover, maybe even more than once. But the true story behind this book is something that few have heard about, until now. In the Heart of the Sea gives some insight into this tale and is one that fans of the book may want to see.
The movie takes place in 1820 in a time when whale oil was an important commodity. It was the ingredient that lit up the city streets and the lanterns in peoples homes and there was a huge demand for it which made it a profitable business. Boats would go out and kill whales for this oil and the voyages were long and it was not always easy to say when a crew would come back to land.
The whaling ship Essex leaves for the sea one day captained by George Pollard Jr (Benjamin walker) and his first mate Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) and the second officer Mathew Joy (Cillian Murphy). They head out and hope the journey will not last more than a year. Along the way they run into a place that has more whales than any crew has ever seen before, the men think they have arrived in heaven but there is a dangerous threat in the water. It confronts them and rips their ship apart, leaving them to die in the ocean. Why did this giant bull sperm whale attack them? How will they get back home? And what terrible acts may they have to commit along the way?
This is a great film, but it is not about what you may think. There is more here than just a story about a huge whale who wreaks havoc upon unsuspecting ships in the sea. It goes deeper in a way that is both surprising and exciting. It it told in a way that is clever and also quite thrilling. The cast has come together and made something special here. The struggles they have to face on this journey are real and they help bring some context to how dangerous this life could be for a sailor. What really brings this film together though are the special effects. The scenes with this great creature can be terrifying and could have people jumping out of their seats. The soundtrack is also wonderful and brings the tone of each scene to colorful life.
The film gets 7/10. It is a well written story and one that most people will enjoy but it is not for everybody. There are some very violent scenes that not only have to do with whales but that involve the crew too. There are also some tough to watch scenes and some painful moments that kids shouldn’t see and could turn the stomach of those more squeamish audience members. But for those who are a fan of the book they will find this movie to be a joyous romp into history.
If you like any of these actors then you should watch this movie. If you want to watch a good thriller this is the picture to see. In the Heart of the Sea comes out today.
