Kubo and the Two Strings takes a boy and his odd allies on an amazing journey

I am a big fan of stop motion animation. This began when I saw the first short starring Wallace and Gromit as a young teen. I found out about Laika though after seeing Coraline. It was a film that told an amazing story and has beautiful visuals throughout. When I saw ParaNorman and Boxtrolls both movies left me with the same feeling. Each one took a peculiar tale and made it a joy to watch unfold. Their next film Kubo and the Two Strings hopes to keep this trend going. I got to see it last week and here are my thoughts on it.

Young Kubo’s (Art Parkinson) peaceful existence comes crashing down when he accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the past. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to unlock a secret legacy. Armed with a magical instrument, Kubo must battle the Moon King (Ralph Fiennes) and other gods and monsters to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.

I really liked Kubo and the Two Strings. For starters, it is a very visually stimulating movie. From the characters to the exotic locales right down to the terrifying monsters all of it looks amazing. The plot is clever and has plenty of mystery going on. There are also a few surprises towards the middle of the film that I didn’t see coming. The villains looked sinister and always brought tons of great fight sequences whenever they showed up on screen. To learn more about Kubo and the Two Strings head over to this website.

Kubo and the Two Strings gets 8/10. It wasn’t the best film Laika has released but I still liked it. The quest is a real pleasure to watch unfold. It is never easy to see where Kubo and his allies will have to head to next. There are some frightening monsters so little kids should not see this film. There is also a great version of a classic Beatles song that fits this film perfectly. Overall it was one of the more original films I have watched in a while and is definitely worth seeing.
