‘La La Land’ A Musical Film with a Strong Retro Vibe

La La Land is a film that takes people on a musical adventure

I didn’t know much about La La Land when I first heard of it. The posters I saw told me very little about this movie. The clips I watched didn’t reveal too much either. I heard mixed things about it going in, but I decided to check it out anyway. Here is what I thought of this film.

You can read the plot for La La Land here:

LA LA LAND tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

It took me a while to collect my thoughts after seeing La La Land. Some of the songs are absolutely amazing. I have had ‘City of Stars’ stuck in my head all week, and that is not a bad thing. It is a simple song but one that can resonant with almost anybody. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have a great chemistry in this film. You can tell they were glad to work together again and give the perfect blend of comedy, music and drama whenever the film calls for it. La La Land deserves 7/10. It has great songs, a wonderful cast and amazing sets. There are lots of throw backs to classic films that many viewers will love to see. I think this is its greatest flaw though. Although I have seen a few classic movies, I have not seen enough to fully appreciate this film. There was much going on that was lost on me, and the ending is a tad odd. Overall it is a good movie but not one that every viewer will enjoy.
