‘Last Flag Flying’ A film with some good moments
War is the topic of a lot of movies recently. They can take place in the past, or deal with more recent events. Last Flag Flying chooses the later. It has Carell playing a more dramatic character, and tells a pretty good story. I knew little about it going in, but decided to check it out anyway. Here is what I thought of this film.
You can read the plot for Last Flag Flying here:
In 2003, 30 years after they served together in the Vietnam War, former Navy Corps medic Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) re-unites with ex-Marine Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) on a different type of mission: to bury Doc’s son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War. Doc decides to forgo burial at Arlington Cemetery and, with the help of his old buddies, takes the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to his home in suburban New Hampshire. Along the way, Doc, Sal and Mueller reminisce and come to terms with shared memories of the war that continues to shape their lives.
Last Flag Flying gets 6/10. It had some funny moments, yet this movie had its flaws. The story is tells is not bad, but there are many scenes where the story drags on. There are other times this movie feels longer than it needs to be. I like these stars, and they do a good job together in this film. The ending was actually pretty good, and did a nice job bringing this tale to a close. I think some people may enjoy this film, but it won’t be for everyone.
