‘Metroid Prime: Echoes’ Samus Aran Returns Stronger Than Ever

Echoes 4 cropped

This new world is split into two parts, and each has its own difficulties and challenges.

This game was the sequel to the successful game Metroid Prime. It is a new adventure that brings with it new challenges for young and old gamers. It is a wonderful game, one that is safe for kids to play with no real violence and lots of puzzles that will force them to think if they want to progress in the story.

I really liked Metroid Prime. It was such an amazing game with new bosses, new areas and a world that had a lot of history to it. The new power-ups were a blast to use like the phazon suit, and I also loved how the plot moved along in a linear motion. The 3D gave gamers a chance to explore all this world had to offer, and there were some interesting twists that keep your interest peaked. So naturally when I heard a sequel was being made, which hadn’t really happened in this series since Metroid 2 was released on the game boy, I knew I wanted to play it. It was again going to be in 3D, and promised to push the limits of the series like never before. I have to say, that this is a worthy sequel for this series. It is one of my favorites, and one that any fan of Metroid must play.

This time Samus Aran ends up on the planet Aether, a world that somehow got split into two different parts. They are called light Aether and dark Aether. Light Aether is the home of the peaceful Luminoth, and dark Aether is inhabited by the cruel Ing. These two species are at war, and the Ing have put the Luminoth at risk of extinction by stealing an important artifact from them. Samus is asked to please help get this item back for the Luminoth, before it is too late. Along the way she will bump into the space pirates again, but will also run into a lot of new enemies that will be very tough to beat. She will also acquire a lot of new items and power-ups to aid her in this quest like the dark suit and the grapple beam. Why did the Ing steal this artifact? What do they want to do with it? And what perils will she have to deal with along the way?

The two worlds seem to have similar maps, but trust me they are not alike. When Samus first enters dark Aether she finds out quickly that the environment is poisonous to her and the longer she stays there, the quicker her health depletes. To safely traverse this area, she has to activate little safe zones with the light beam. When inside, she can heal a bit and be safe from some Ing attacks. As the game progresses, she will acquire suit upgrades to make it easier for players to explore this planet. There is also a new enemy who will be a real challenge for gamers, and one that you will never look forward to fighting, trust me on this. This is also the first Metroid game that had a multiplayer mode, and it is a new way to play this game with your friends.

The new power-ups in this game are awesome. The new suits amazing, and not just because they look cool. They have a great purpose to make sure you can explore new areas and survive the harsh environment of dark Aether. The dark and light beams are very powerful,  and can really help you take out those nasty Ing. These new items do have a limit, so be sure to collect rounds and use them sparingly, at least in the beginning of the game. The echo and dark visor are also awesome. Each one helps you see the world in a different way, and can help you see paths you would not otherwise know exist.

You also get to fight some really challenging guardians who you will have to defeat if you want to get your power-ups back. There is a jump guardian, a boost guardian, a grapple guardian, a spider guardian and much more. You will need to beat these mini bosses if you want to continue in the game. There are also huge bosses like Amorbis, a giant worm with three heads. He is massive, the battle is intense and he is a real challenge to beat, took me at least a few tries. But one of the toughest bosses in this game by far is Quadraxis, a huge robot. This is the first battle you fight without any shielded areas, so you have to try not to get hit by him too much. He is a real pain, not only because of his enormous size but because he is a tough foe who refuses to surrender. The battle is very intense, but once he does go down you get a power-up that makes it all worth it.

Bu the best thing about this world are the graphics. There are portals that you can use to traverse both areas, and when you do the visuals are very well done.  The way that dark Aether looks makes it very menacing. There is no bright sun there, and each step into a new area is bereft with dangerous locations. Light Aether is full of amazing colors, and the place is full of creatures and beautiful plants. But this area also has its share of enemies and risks, and it is wise to tread softly here, for you never know what is going to happen next. There is also times when you are in light Aether, and a weird darkness will overtake creatures, often very suddenly. An ing has the ability to take over people and creatures, and when this happens you better be prepared for a tough fight. The person will have stronger weapons and they will be harder to beat than before. Even the space pirates are not immune from this happening, and when it does, it will not be fun.

I really liked this game. I loved the new items, the original plot, and the challenges it brings. It really makes it one of the best games yet for this series. There will be times when you will get frustrated and you may want to quit, but don’t. It is worth the challenges to see what you acquire from them, and the surprises this game will bring will make you eager to continue on. The controls are easy to get used to, and the soundtrack works perfectly in each locale Samus enters. This game helped spawn one more sequel for the Metroid Prime series, and changed the way these games were played forever.

If you liked Metroid Prime, you have to play this game. If you are a fan of the Metroid series, this is a game you should not miss out on. It truly is a classic game, on that is perfect for fans of all ages. Go out and play it, it will be worth your time and energy.
