Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates falls into the familiar trap of trying too hard to get laughs.
—
Comedies fall into two categories with me. Either they are really clever or they try way too hard to get laughs. Films like The Hangover, Neighbors, Scary Movie and American Pie were hilarious comedies. But what about a film like Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. I was able to see this new comedy last week and here is what I thought of it.
You can read the plot for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates below:
Mike (Adam DeVine) and Dave (Zac Efron) are young, adventurous, fun-loving brothers who tend to get out of control at family gatherings. When their sister Jeanie ( Stephanie Beard) reveals her Hawaiian wedding plans, the rest of the Stangles insist that the brothers bring respectable dates. After placing an ad on Craigslist, the siblings decide to pick Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick), two charming and seemingly normal women. Once they arrive on the island, however, Mike and Dave realize that their companions are ready to get wild and party.
I really wanted to like Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, but I just couldn’t. It is not the fault of the cast, they try their best to tell a supposedly true story in a comedic way. I think the biggest fault in this movie is that it tries too hard to be funny. I have seen plenty of films with Zac Efron that were not only smart but made me laugh a ton, so I am not sure what happened here. The rest of the cast are great actors and don’t have to push themselves to get laughs, so I am confused as to why they tried so hard in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
What really hurts the film in my eyes though is that it is obvious what is going to happen. From the beginning right to the end it is clear what is going to happen. I understand this is not true for everybody but it sure was for me. Overall Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is a film that some people may like yet most people should avoid it altogether. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates gets 3.5/10. With too many over the top attempts to get laughs, a predictable plot, some dry characters and nudity that was not even really needed make for a pretty bad comedy. It is a real shame because I am sure there was some way to make this a great film yet this just didn’t happen. In my opinion don’t see this film in theaters, best to wait for Redbox or Netflix.
Viewers who want to see a clever comedy should not pick this movie. Fans of comedies will only be disappointed in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. Yet those who are looking for a simple comedy might enjoy this film. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates comes out this Friday.
