‘Minions’ Goes Back to Where it all Began

Minions 4 resize

A solo film where three minions go on a trip to save their tribe and fulfill their destiny

The minions have been gaining popularity ever since Despicable Me came out in in 2010. They started as odd little henchman for Gru. They were simple but were always there to help him achieve his goals. When Despicable Me 2 came out in 2013, these little odd things were seen in a different light, and fans got to see more about them and they were even given a larger role in this film. Since then they have become extremely popular.

Some of them now have names, and during the credits of Despicable Me 2 people were made aware of plans for a minions solo movie. This seemed like a good idea, but people like me thought how on earth could they do this? The minions are good characters, but it seemed like a big leap to make a film that they starred in. Heck they don’t even speak perfect English, so there were many concerns on how this could be done in a way that would work. Somehow they found a way to give them a film that is both unique and full of things viewers of all ages will enjoy.

The basic plot is that the minions have always existed, even before man came to be and long before creatures crawled out of the ocean. The goal of these beings has always been to find the baddest creature and to follow him and help him conquer those in his way. The minions have never had a problem finding a master, but keeping one is another story. Throughout time they have followed many masters, but something always ends up happening to them.

The minions have to find a master, if they don’t the whole species is in danger of extinction. One brave minion named Kevin decides to go out into the world to find the baddest master to lead and in doing this will give help his people have purpose again. He takes Bob and Stuart with him because he is unable to embark on this journey by himself and off they go to see who they can find.

From here the film really builds up steam with these 3 minions seeing sights beyond their wildest dreams and going to places that defy their imaginations. The world has changed since they left it, and although they are simple it is hard for anyone they encounter to dislike them. But where will they find a master worthy to lead? Where could they go to find such a person? And will they find it in time to save the tribe before it is too late?

The film has a lot of jokes that take place in the 1960s, and although I was born long after this era I got every joke they threw at the audience. They are all very clever and never come off as forced or ridiculous. The special effects are astounding and really bring each locale to colorful life. From England to the minions temporary home to important areas in our history all of it will be a wonderful dish for your senses.

But the greatest thing about this film is the chance to finally not only learn where the minions came from but why they are on this earth. They are a simple species but they are lovable and none of them possess a bad bone in their bodies. They also are full of big hearts and kids will learn so much from them. Even though they want to follow someone who is bad, they have a way of bringing out the best in those they follow. The film also has some surprising moments, and if you keep an eye out at the end you will see someone fans of the Despicable Me films will know all too well.

This movie deserves 9/10. It is not the best movie to come out this summer, but it does have something for viewers of diverse age groups. Kids will love every time the minions say something, and older viewers will get a kick out of all of the 1960s humor and the music from that timeless era. It is a film that will surprise you and is the perfect film to take the family to see.

If you liked the Despicable Me movies, this is a film you will want to run out and see. If you kids love the minions, they will beg you to take them to this movie. It is better than it may seem and comes with some wonderful plot twists to keep it interesting. Run out and watch this film when it comes out, you will not regret it.
