The Good Men Project

Review of Disney’s ‘TomorrowLand’

Tomorrowland 4 fix

A fun new film made for dreamers of all ages

Imagine a place where there is no suffering, greed, corruption or disease. A place that not only looks futuristic, but is the one place left where anything is possible. It sounds like a dream right? Well not in this new movie from Disney that comes out this Friday. It takes moviegoers to a magical place, and one that holds the key to bringing dreams to life and has a purpose that is higher than you could ever imagine. Kids will love this movie that has something for all age groups.

The movie starts with George Clooney trying to tell viewers about how bad things around the world, but when this comes off as too dark and gloomy he instead takes everyone on a trip to the past. Zoom back in time to 1964 at the New York World’s Fair, where a young boy named Frank wants to show his new invention at a contest with a small prize of $50. The judges are not that impressed, especially because it doesn’t work the way it is supposed to. But a little girl is intrigued by his ingenuity, and gives him a peculiar pin. He sneaks on a boat on the ride It’s A Small World After All, and he ends up on a weird transport that takes him to an amazing place that defies imagination and is hard to put into words. There are giant buildings, astounding inventions and robots that are building this one of a kind place that promises to bring the future today.

Jump back to modern times, with a teenage girl named Casey who is breaking into a NASA shuttle station that is supposed to be torn down in a few days. But that doesn’t happen when she decides to take matters in to her own hands and tampers with some of the machinery. She makes a clean getaway and stops this operation from happening. At this point you may wonder why would be willing to do such a thing, turns out it is to prevent her dad from losing his job which is a very noble cause. The day goes by normally with every teacher she has in school the next day bringing some gloomy and depressing issue to the class as they ignore her hand up, and when she does finally get to ask a question her professor looks at her like she is a crazy person.

That night Casey decides to stop the machinery again at the same NASA shuttle site, but this time gets picked up by the authorities. She makes bail but when she picks up her effects, she finds an odd looking pin. When she touches it, she gets transported to an open field and in the distance is an astounding site. It is a city that looks like something from another world, and she is dying to find out how to get there. But after a longer trip there where Casey gets to see all the city has to offer, for some reason she is whisked away from there. This time there is no way to get back, and this is devastating news. She has to find a way to get back there but has no idea how to accomplish this objective.

The movie really gets going from here with plenty of twists and surprises that turn this into an action packed movie and the goal starts to come into focus. In a nutshell, there is a man who can help take Casey back to Tomorrowland, but it will not be easy. There are people out there who want to stop her, and will go to extremes to make sure they achieve that purpose. She finds this mysterious man, and the journey starts right away. Who is this man, and why does he refuse to help her out? Why are there all of these people who want to kill them? And how on earth are they going to get back to Tomorrowland?

The cast does a great job in this movie. From the major players to the minors, they all have an important part to bring to the table. Britt Robertson is the perfect fit for Casey. She breaks the mold of the usual feminine roles seen in Hollywood films from the early days that still show up today from time to time. She is smart, resourceful, a risk taker and refuses to take no for an answer. She is strong, independent and she is willing to take chances to protect the people she truly cares about. She is a great role model for women today, and girls especially can learn a lot of good lessons from her.

The special effects are just amazing. From the scenes in 1964 to the sprawling metropolis that is Tomorrowland, there is so much colors and elements that audiences will just eat up. They also help bring Tomorrowland to life in a believable and magical way where it feels like a place people could go visit. From the clear skies to the giant buildings to the futuristic inventions together they all make this a place that viewers will love seeing and will never want to leave.

This is a film that not everyone will enjoy, but kids and teens will love it. It is a film that fans of Disney and Sci-Fi will get a real kick out of, but there are elements that are missing here. The film is good don’t get me wrong, but it is unlikely it will be a huge summer hit. The plot does drag on at some moments, and the movie starts off slow with people not sure of what is going on. Because of this and other reason it gets 6.5/10.

If you are looking for a film to take your kids to see, this is one they will enjoy. If you are looking for a film to see with your friends, this may be a film they will like. It is not one of the greatest movies coming out, but is has so cool things that set it apart from the pack. Will it do well in the coming weeks, only time will tell.
