As Variety notes, the film, which debuted on Friday, “delivered Spike Lee’s best opening in over a decade.” BlackKkKlansman finished fifth at the box office over the weekend, bringing in close to $11 million, but that’s on a $15 million budget at far fewer theaters than competitors that scored better. Based on the 2014 memoir by Ron Stallworth, BlacKkKlansman tells the story of a black police officer infiltrating a local chapter of the KKK in the 1970s. In the film, he’s played by John David Washington, who needs the help of a white cop (played by Adam Driver) to actually attend the KKK meetings. Other cast members include Isiah Whitlock Jr., Alec Baldwin, and Topher Grace. Lee also manages to throw in some clips of President Trump, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by film critics. As CNN’s Brian Lowry writes, “BlacKkKlansman captures the absurd aspects of this story, while still drawing parallels that make the movie feel urgent and dishearteningly relevant. For that reason, it’s among Lee’s best films in some time.” Rotten Tomatoes critics give the film a 97 percent fresh score, while the audience weighs in at 78 percent fresh. Over the past three days, Social is more bullish than RT’s citizen reviewers, giving #BlacKkKlansman an 84 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
