Cult favorite celebrates its 15th anniversary with a musical do over.
Unfortunately, while a Mean Girls sequel won’t be happening, it has been confirmed that a “fetch” musical is in the works!
According to Vulture, Tina Fey and her composer hubby, Jeff Richmond, were attending the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual gala when they decided to spill a few details about the upcoming musical. Richmond said:
“We’re very happy with how things are coming along so far. And maybe this thing will be out by the Mean Girls 15th anniversary.”
This news definitely comes at a time when we need it most. The film’s 10th anniversary just passed, and we were feeling nostalgic for everything and anything Mean Girls.
The couple also mentioned that they would want new and fresh faces to star in the musical. Fey said:
“Hopefully we’ll find a young person who, at this moment, is still in college but will be making her way to New York as we write. Still a fetus somewhere.”
Although we have a way to go before the 15th anniversary, Fey and Richmond believe an early version of the play will be ready this year.
“I think we are looking to do some workshops and readings during the course of this year,” said Richmond. “Maybe during the summer and into the fall.”
And guess what? Our favorite bad girl is getting a musical number! That’s right, Richmond also mentioned that Regina George will be belting out a big number within 15 minutes of the musical’s opening act.
We wonder what it will be about: ugly skirts, being popular, wanting to lose three pounds, crack?
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. At least now we have something to look forward to!
