The Conjuring 2 follows another file from Ed and Lorraine Warren and although it is clever this film is not that scary

I have recently gotten back into horror movies. I really enjoyed the Saw series with its psychological elements it made for films I will always like. I also really liked Insidious 3 being one of the first films in a long time that made me jump a bit from my seat. The Gallows was alright yet it wasn’t that scary. Horror movies these days are not trying as hard to being frightening and rely more on special effects than the good old fashioned ways that have made many films classics. I was able to see The Conjuring 2 this week and here is what I thought of it.

Here is the plot for The Conjuring 2:

“In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson (Frances O’Connor), an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next target of the malicious spirits.”

I didn’t hate The Conjuring 2, but it I didn’t love it either. It does have a wonderful cast that together do a splendid job telling this shocking true story. The film also does a good job of transporting people back to 1977 and shows England in all of its grandeur and splendor. The special effects are also pretty good and brings all of the terror and evil to life in a believable way. This film also does bring a few nice twists that make for an all around not awful film.

Yet The Conjuring 2 has some issues. For starters, the film is pretty predictable and therefore it lost much of its scare factor in my eyes. The movie didn’t really get good for me until the last 30-45 minutes. Before then the film moves slow and when it does try to get going there is little here that is really that scary. Yet the worst part of this movie is that it is really lacking in the frightening department. It tries its best to scare you but anyone who has seen a few films like this can easily predict what is going to happen in so many scenes. It was a real bummer because I was hoping to be scared at least a few times but sadly there was only one part that sort of made me jump a bit but that was it. Overall it is an okay sequel but not something big time horror fans will enjoy.

The Conjuring 2  gets 5.5/10. It is not an awful film on its own but it really falls flat too many times on scenes that should be scary but just aren’t. It is a film that I had hopes for but like so many before it I think the special effects hurt it in some ways. They look great but maybe it would have been scarier if they had used some make-up and costumes on the spirits. Many people in the theater appeared to have loved this one but for me it was only alright. You can learn more about The Conjuring 2 on its website.

Fans of the first film may like The Conjuring 2. Those who scare easy could find themselves jumping out of their seats a few times watching this one. Yet many people will find this one to be a disappointment sadly. The Conjuring 2 comes out Friday. You can like The Conjuring 2 on Facebook and follow the film on Twitter.
