The film has friendship, loyalty, teamwork and zany situations that men will find hilarious.
This film has a good cast, a clever plot and very good special effects and characters people will enjoy watching. Men will like it because it is heavy on male friendship, and how tough it can be.
Dave Skylark and Aaron Rapoport have been friends for years, and have been through a lot together. Skylark hosts the hit show Skylark Tonight, and Aaron has produced the show since it began. The show mainly consists of celebrities coming on and getting interviewed, but many times they end up divulging big secrets. I refuse to spoil any of them here, but I assure you they are hilarious.
After the show celebrates its 1000th episode, Dave sees an old friend he went to school with at the party. This person tells him his show is a joke, and that he is no journalist. This is something that hits him hard, and he decides something has to be done to change this. It is found out that Kim J0ng-Un is a big fan of his show, so Dave decides he must interview him. If he is able to make this happen, not only will he get a lot of new viewers but his credibility will also be stronger.
So these two friends decide to set up the interview of a lifetime in one of the most dangerous countries on earth. From here the movie really takes off, with the CIA wanting them to kill Kim, and to make sure no one can connect it back to the US. Skylark and Kim start to become friends, with Kim letting him use his tank to blow stuff up and giving him anything he could ever desire.
It seems like a paradise to him, and not the trashy country the news lets America believe it is. Their biggest bonding moment is when Dave goes into the tank and Katy Perry’s song Firework starts playing. It is a great scene because Kim tries to act like he hates that song, or better yet that his wife left it on. But Dave surprises Kim by admitting he loves the song, and gives no judgement that Kim likes it too. It is a hilarious moment and one that cements their friendship, at least for a good while.
Meanwhile, Aaron and Dave seem to be drifting apart. Aaron tries multiple times to tell Dave the truth about Kim, like he is a madman and someone who wants to keep the people in his country hungry and poverty stricken. These seem like harsh words, but all Aaron really wants to do is make sure his friend is safe. He wants him to see Kim for who he really is, and because he is such a good friend he will not let it go. Sadly, for a good part of the movie this tears these two guys apart, making it impossible to be near each other. Luckily, thanks to a turn of events I refuse to spoil here, things do get better for them.
Later in the film, Dave gets Kim to cry during their interview, and this shatters their tight friendship quickly and has Kim’s true colors come to light. It is a great scene again with the song Fireworks coming into play in a way that is both hilarious and genius. This all leads to a number of scenes full of explosions, violence and extreme action. And what men wouldn’t like to see such things?
The ending may seem predictable, but it is one I enjoyed. This is not the best comedy I have seen, but it made me laugh and think at the same time. Overall, I would rate this movie at an 8/10. It is not a film for everyone, but if you enjoyed This is the End you will definitely want to watch this one.
It was banned from most theaters thanks to a Sony hack and threats from the North Koren government, but it is available to watch on Netflix, Hulu and iTunes. The film has been rented online in huge numbers thanks to all the controversy surrounding it, and has become Sony Pictures highest-grossing online release. It also has become the top selling Google Play and YouTube video of 2014.
It is a good film to sit down and watch with your male friends, you will laugh until it hurts. But I wouldn’t recommend watching this with a date, and it is definitely not for kids. Give this film a view, you won’t regret it.
