The spy genre is not unfamiliar to audiences. It has been seen many times and in many different ways on TV, in comic books and even in a few films. The genre got very popular with shows like Mission Impossible and characters like James Bond. This new film is based on the TV show that aired from 1964 to 1968 and was pretty popular in its day. The film takes place in the 1960s during the cold war and fans of spy films will have many things to like in this film and run to see it this Friday.

The film begins with two men who are on a mission that has to do with a woman. One wants to save her and the other one has a different mission. They are enemies and have a few moments that end in fighting and trying to get away from each other. Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) succeeds in his mission and helps this girl out. Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) is very unhappy with how things turned out and swears he will make Napoleon pay.

Both of their superiors call them to a nice little restaurant one day to have a chat, with neither of them knowing the other person is going to be there. Not only are they not happy to see each other but they end up learning they are going to be working together. A woman named Victoria Viciguerra (Elizabeth Debicki) wants to wreak havoc on the world somehow and it is up to these two expert agents to stop her before it is too late. They will be aided by Gaby Teller ( Alicia Vikander) who is a beautiful woman whose father turned up missing many years ago. She thinks it may have something to do with Victoria’s plans, but she cannot be certain. Will these two men be able to work together? What is it that Victoria is planning to do? How will Gabby help them with their mission? And will they stop this terrible plot in time?

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are an odd pair but they work perfectly in this movie. They always mix the comedic moments and the fight scenes in ways that always add to each scene and never once bog it down or take meaning from it. They play very well off of each other and although their characters are polar opposites this is a great thing that raises the bar for this picture. Each scene they are in  whether they are working together or fighting is hilarious and always ends in an action packed way. It is apparent these actors put a lot of work into their character and it really shows in their performance.

The sets and costumes are done perfectly and bring the 1960s back to colorful life. It feels like a trip into the past and never once feels fake and instead always comes off as genuine. From the cars to the gadgets straight down to the attire it all fits in the time period splendidly. The soundtrack does a really great job of playing tunes from this era that people will recognize and want to shake their head to whether they were alive in this era or not. But the best thing is the plot that seems linear but actually has a number of unforeseen twists and turns that add to the suspense and mystery of what is really going on. All of these elements together make for a one of a kind spy film that many people will be eager to see for themselves.

The picture deserves 8/10. There is a lot that people from the 1960s will love and it is sure to take them down a trip on memory lane. The fans of the show may enjoy it but it is not for everyone. Some age groups will see nothing special here and are therefore are sure to not want to see this movie. Some spy fans may not like it because it strays from the norm in a number of ways. Those who are young like kids and teens should also not see it because of some adult situations and acts of violence.

If you were a fan of the TV show you may want to check this film out. If you like action pictures this is the movie for you. If you are looking for a film that keeps you guessing until the final moments you must see this one. Overall it is a fun spy film that blends old and new elements into something special that doesn’t come along everyday. If you take a chance on this one you may find out it was worth the risk.
