Ghostbusters is a well known franchise. Since the original movie came out in 1984 it has always been loved by fans of all ages. After this movie came out there was a sequel that also did very well and overall was a hit and fans were happy to see the whole cast together again combating an even greater threat than in the first film. There have also been a number of popular cartoons shows and one very good video game. Since this game came out in 2009 fans have been hearing a lot of talk about a new movie finally being made. With the recent passing of Harold Ramis it appeared the project looked like it would never happen. Just in the last few years though talk began of a reboot of the series involving an all female cast. Recently photos have been released online of the cast but it took a long time to see a trailer. It has been released online finally and here is what this writer thought of it.

There is a new kind of ghostly threat coming to cause havoc in New York City and the old team is no longer around to stop them. A new team consisting of a paranormal researcher (Melissa McCarthy), a physicist (Kristen Wiig), a nuclear engineer (Kate McKinnon) and a subway worker (Leslie Jones) heed the call and have to create some new equipment to stop these ghosts from terrorizing the city. There is someone who has created a device that is amplifying paranormal activity and it is up to this new crew to find them and stop their plans before it is too late. They quickly find out these new ghosts are very dangerous because they can possess humans and make them do anything they want. What new threat has caused so many ghosts to return to New York City? What are their plans? And can these new Ghostbusters  stop them before it is too late?

The new Ghostbusters trailer is just awful. There are a couple of reasons why it is not worth watching. The cast doesn’t appear to work well off of each other and their characters seem pretty one dimensional. There is also no explanation how they get the same firehouse the old team worked out of (if that is the same house that is) and there isn’t much here that will excite fans who remember the past movies and less to interest younger viewers.

The worst thing about this trailer though is that it is not the least bit funny. There are a few attempts at comedy but they all fall short. With lines like Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) saying after getting slimed “That stuff went everyone by the way, in every crack. Very hard to wash off” and Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) yelling after her colleague gets possessed by a ghost  “Oh hell no, the devil is a liar! Get off of my friend ghost!” she then slaps Abby very hard in the face, people see the ghost leave but for some reason she decides to slap her again and says “The power of Patty compels you!” These scenes are meant to be funny but instead comes off as trying too hard and ridiculous to merit any laughs at all. This writer is not sure what they were thinking when making this trailer because it really does nothing to make the movie look good or even that interesting. Right now it looks like a failed attempt at a reboot and it is hard to say if there is much that can be done to change that. Hopefully the next trailer will be better because if it is not there is little chance this movie will do that great when it comes out this summer.
