This film shows how far a man is willing to go when he wants to survive.
—
This movie takes the viewer back to a time period where much of the wilderness was uncharted and when Native Americans still had control of areas of this country. Based on true events, The Revenant is a harrowing tale about a group of men who have to do all they can to survive and by the end none of them are the same person.
The movie takes place in 1832 where a group of trappers and hunters—led by Captain Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson)—are out collecting pelts that they hope to make a profit on in the unsettled wilderness of the Louisiana Purchase. While they are on this expedition a group of Arikara Indians attack them and force them to retreat with as much supplies and pelts they can carry to one of the boats they had docked nearby. Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is one of the hunters and is also their guide because he knows the lands pretty well. Mr. Glass gets wounded when he tries to hunt a grizzly bear who attacks him and mauls him up pretty badly.
The mission changes to getting Mr. Glass and the rest of the party to a fort nearby as soon as possible where this man can get the proper medical attention. But when they all get to a mountain range a tough decision is made to have John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), Jim Bridger ( Will Poulter) and Mr. Glass’s son Hawk (Forrest Goodluck) stay behind to take care him and make sure he gets back to the fort safely. Yet as the conditions only seem to worsen, John thinks it is best to let this man die so the rest of the men have a better chance of making it home alive. The film really gets moving from here. Through a series of stunning events the movie takes an interesting turn and definitely changes the fate of everyone involved in this small party. One thing that is guaranteed is that risks will be taken and they will all have to think outside of the box if any of them hope to survive this unforgiving wilderness. Will Mr. Glass live? How will these men find a way to make it to the fort? And what dangers will they have to face along the way?
The film takes viewers on a trip into the past, shows the dangers of the fur trade—all while giving a good history lesson. But what sets this film apart from the rest is Mr. Glass. He endures so much in this movie and there are a ton of moments when things seem hopeless but amazingly he never gives up. The special effects are wonderful and bring all of the scenery to life in a realistic and sometimes frightening way. The score is well done and does a splendid job of adding to the dramatic moments. It also adds the necessary element to make an action-packed scene a blast to watch. The cast is perfect with everyone having an important role to play. They all know how to act and also make sure none of their characters become boring or dull. It is a good dramatic picture that most people will really like.
This movie gets 8/10. It is a movie that has a clever plot that rarely drags. But this movie will not be for everyone. If you are not a fan of violence then you will not like this movie. There are a number of scenes that bring the violence hardcore without any filters and this will have some people closing their eyes. But other than that this is a very good movie that is worth checking out.
If you want to see a unique drama then this is a movie you will want to see. If you enjoy any of these cast members then you won’t want to miss this film. The Revenant comes out this Friday.
