A movie that is vulgar but has its heartfelt moments
The romantic comedy is not new to Hollywood. It has been in existence almost since the beginning. The formula is simple really with the man meeting woman and somehow against all odds they fall in love and end with marriage and living happily ever after. This can end with kids, but is not necessary to make a good romantic movie. But in recent years the formula is evolving into something different. With these new films, the main character can have some big issues and may not seem like someone who even wants true love. The don’t even have to be men anymore. This film follows this new progression that is changing the way comedies are being made.
Amy is a woman who was told an important lesson when she was a kid by her father. He says to her and her sister that monogamy is not realistic and is something that they should avoid at all costs. Amy takes this lesson to heart and therefore has never been in any kind of serious relationship. She just has fun with lots of different men and has found ways to make sure it never becomes serious. She has a good job and a great apartment and an awesome best friend. To her there doesn’t seem to be anything missing in her perfect life.
But when she is asked by her boss to write a piece on a new doctor, something strange happens. They go out a few times and she finds herself liking him. This is new and scary to her and truthfully she has no idea how to proceed. There is a chance for her to be happy here, but does she really want that in her life. What will she do with this new guy? Where does he want them to go in the future? And will this film have a happy ending?
The movie is very different in many ways. Amy is a drunk party animal who makes sure to stay away from anything serious. She breaks the mold of how woman are supposed to act in these movies but this is a good thing. She is strong, independent and knows she doesn’t need to get married and have kids to be complete as a grown woman. This is something that not only is ridiculous to her but at times can be terrifying.
This is a good romantic comedy, although it does start off kind of slow. In the early moments it is hard to tell where the movie is going to go, and even once it gets going there is no guarantee things will go as people expect them to. The film has some heartbreaking moments but it is enjoyable to watch. The main character grows a ton as the movie progresses and by the end she is not the same person. This is a good new comedy for adults but kids should not see it, there is too much cursing and adult situations.
For these reason the movie gets 7.5/10. It is not Apatow’s best work, but it has a lot of good things going for it. There are many scenes couples will relate to and moments that could bring a tear to your eye. Fans of Apatow will enjoy his new picture, but it is not going to be for everyone. If you don’t like movies with gross jokes you may want to miss it.
If you are looking for a good comedy to see, you will want to watch this movie. Those who have seen Apatow’s other films will definitely enjoy this one. But kids and older people may want to miss this one, it won’t have much they will enjoy.
