Dr. Gerald Buckberg (Sept. 29, 1935 - Sept. 20, 2018) was a Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and was acknowledged with the highest awards in the field of cardiac surgery. His initial landmark research in blood cardioplegia dramatically increased the safety of open-heart procedures, transforming these formerly high-risk operations into the routine procedures they are today. His techniques are used by 85% of cardiac surgeons in the United States, and by 75% of heart surgeons globally. His book, SOLVING THE MYSTERIES OF HEART DISEASE, was released shortly before his passing in 2018.
