“If it turns out that this is incurable, would you marry me?” is not your traditional marriage proposal, but then again, Andy and I haven’t lived traditional lives.

Sarah McBride is the Campaigns and Communications Manager for LGBT Progress at the Center for American Progress. Prior to joining CAP, Sarah obtained her undergraduate degree at American University where she served as student body president. At the end of her term, Sarah made national headlines when she came out as transgender in the student newspaper. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Sarah currently serves on the Board of Directors of Equality Delaware, the state’s primary LGBT-advocacy and -educational organization. In that capacity, Sarah helped lead and served as the primary spokesperson for the successful effort to add gender identity and expression to her state’s nondiscrimination and hate-crimes laws during the 2013 legislative session. In 2008 she served as a field organizer for Gov. Jack Markell’s (D-DE) campaign and in 2010 as field director for Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden’s re-election effort.
