It was during the national anthem – even though no one was kneeling and President Trump didn’t shoot out any incendiary tweets. Instead, pop star Fergie took to center court and fascinated Social with a strange rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” She may have been attempting to emulate some of the all-time great national anthem performances by the likes of Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye, but it didn’t exactly work. As TNT cameras panned around the crowd, they caught glimpses of snickering players and fans alike: Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green was stifling laughter, as was Chance the Rapper and Jimmy Kimmel. On his show this week, Kimmel joked, “The reason I was smiling is because I love the national anthem so much.” Fergie actually issued an apology afterwards, writing: “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.” Fair enough. Over the last three days, “Fergie + National Anthem” has a 24 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
