The report, which came out on Monday, provides a blueprint for pediatricians and parents about how to talk to adolescents or young adults who are interested in, as the AAP calls it, “voluntary body modifications.” It notes—perhaps in defense of those who enjoy tattoos—”public opinion of the relationship between having a tattoo and deviant behavior is changing.” In fact, in a 2010 Pew Research Center study, 38 percent of respondents between the ages of 18-29 had at least one tattoo, though 72 percent of those respondents said their tats were covered up. The AAP report also discusses the potential side effects involved with tattoos, namely infections from amateur artists who don’t follow proper procedures. Safety regulations are still largely at the discretion of individual states, and as of 2012, there were nine states that kicked that authority down to the local level. Social seems to be narrowly in favor of tattoos: Over the last 90 days, they have a 51 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
