Retired social worker tracks down the fate of child laborers photographed by Lewis Hine at the turn of the century.
—
Between 1908 and 1924 Lewis Hine’s pictures of children laborers exposed the world to the cruel reality of the US Industrial age. His photos contributed to the labor reform movement of the mid 20th century. Nearly 90 years later, one retired social worker goes on a journey to figure out what happen to some of the children in Hine’s photos.
I know this period and Mr.Hines work. What is interesting is that these photos offer a historical counter narrative to the idea that simply being male guaranteed privilege.Over 10,000 homeless newsboys went on strike in New York city in 1899,literally over pennies a day. There is no such thing as carte blanche male privilege and these photos offer legitimate testimony to that fact.
Is there a website or anything for this project? I’d love to know more than the little bit in the video!
