The Trump Administration announced last Thursday that steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union would be subject to a 25 percent and 10 percent tax, respectively. The announcement prompted outrage and talks of retaliation from ordinarily conciliatory leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who called the tariffs “insulting” on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström also announced on Friday that the EU would take the U.S. to the World Trade Organization over the tariffs. “We are not seeking to escalate any situation,” Malmström said. “But not responding would be the same as accepting these tariffs, which we consider are illegal.” Social media users agree with Trudeau and Malmström, giving Trump’s tariffs 79 percent negative opinions on 30dB. –Hugo Guzman
