It’s the end of a holiday weekend in the U.S., and my Facebook feed was full of some of the most annoying “entrepreneur” posts ever.
You know the type. They happen every weekend, especially after holidays. They go a little something like this: “STOP LIVING FOR THE WEEKEND/HOLIDAYS. BUILD A LIFE YOU DON’T HAVE TO VACATION FROM. SO GLAD I DID IT. ENTREPRENEUR FREEDOM STUFF BLAH BLAH BLAH.”
These posts drive me insane, especially when they’re posted over holidays.
Here’s why. First, the people who post those types of things are usually NOT high-powered entrepreneurs. They’re not doing as well as they portray. Some are, but most are just recycling rundown content that other info-sellers have sold them. Weak.
Second, they’re talking far too romantically about entrepreneurship. Running companies is a very hard thing to do. It’s messy. It’s emotional. And it’s work. Stop acting as if it isn’t. Phony.
Third, their unabated and phony love for entrepreneurship implies their distaste for being “an employee” and “working for the man.” What is this about? How in the world can you run a fantastic business without employees? Are you planning on looking down on your own employees too? You don’t sound like someone anyone would love to work for.
Entrepreneurship is A way, not THE way. Got it?
