Last week, Transport for London (TfL), the government board that makes decisions about transportation services in the city, declined to renew the ride-sharing app’s license to operate. TfL says Uber’s “approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility,” citing Uber’s background-check process and failure to disclose serious crimes committed by drivers. “We will appeal the decision on behalf of millions of Londoners, but we do so with the knowledge that we must also change,” new Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi wrote in response. The ban was supposed to begin on Sept. 30, but Uber can continue to operate normally as long as the appeals process drags on. Although Uber is a multibillion-dollar company and hardly a victim deserving of a pity-party, there has been a groundswell of support to keep it in the city: More than 800,000 people have signed a Change.org petition to that effect. And over the last seven days, “TFL + Uber + Decision” has just a 42 percent positive score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz
