6 Tips that will help you design your business card

Creating a card may seem easy, but when doing so you have to take into account many things. A card must gather the necessary information and distribute it in a few square centimeters to be attractive and effective.

Presenting a company or a professional in such a small space is a complicated task: we must make this piece of paper represent the brand and relay its most positive qualities, right? But it is clear that each client is a world and that their particularities will have to be taken into account when developing the design.

1. Choose the format correctly

Although the most “typical” card is presented horizontally, there are more possible options. It can be vertical, have more original concrete forms or be of different sizes.

It is important that you define the format of the card before you start designing its interior because its orientation will depend on the position and the amount of data that is entered.

Although the most standard format is 85 x 55 mm, square-cards are also quite fashionable, cards that are around 2.5” x 2.5” .

2. Choose what data to put

There is nothing worse than a saturated data card everywhere without order or synthesis.

To create an attractive card, you must first choose the essential data you want to add. The data to include will vary greatly from the type of company you have: if it is a physical store it will be more interesting to add the postal address than if it is an online store, for example.

If you want to create a link between your card and the online world of your brand, you can add interactive content such as QR codes or promotional codes, for example.

Think carefully about what data you want to add so as not to create a card full of information that is not clear enough for users.

3. Decide the typographic style and its size

One of the negative things about designing in such small spaces is that every element that enters this space seems to be very large.

As for the fonts, we recommend that you choose sizes between 7 and 11 points, so that the letter is visible and consistent with the card format. To choose the font, it will also be interesting to take into account the style and measurements of the graphic elements that will make up the design, although we recommend that you use simple typographies and a maximum of two, since the space is very small.

4. Integrate the corporate image correctly

If you are creating a card for a brand or for a specific company, it is important that you integrate the elements of the corporate image into your design.

Does the brand have a logo, typefaces and specific colors? Is it characterized by certain graphic elements? If so, it is ideal that all these representative elements are reflected on the card so that it correctly transmits the brand identity.

5. Put a lot of care in the design

We cannot teach you how to design in a post, but we will give you some tips so that you can do your best when choosing the design of your card.

As we have already mentioned, it is ideal that you choose a simple typeface. We also recommend that, in addition to typography, the entire set of your card is simple, without too much information or colors. It is important that you give priority to information and not only to form. Its design has to be clear and clean, to facilitate the reading of the data in it.

Try to integrate the logo in a very visible way: it is a fundamental and identifying element of your brand, so it is very important that you do not place it tiny in a corner. Give prominence and let it stand out.

Another trick? You can turn your card into something “functional” , such as a ruler to measure, a key ring or an opener. In this way, customers will use it and remember it periodically.

6. Consider the paper l

The type of printing and paper chosen are also an indispensable part of the overall design of the business card. Do you want a card in coated paper? In offset? You also have to keep in mind that there are more media besides paper, for example, you can use recyclable, special materials, etc.

We recommend that you do all the printing tests necessary to see what type of paper is best for your card.

Follow these tips to design your business card and see how you get very good results. If you have never designed, and do not know how to start, we recommend that you hire a designer or an agency.

Keep in mind that the design of the card will accompany you for a long time, and that it is your cover letter for many potential customers. It is better to make a small economic investment and achieve a good result, than to want to invest little and lose the possibility of attracting potential customers.
