This comment was by Tony Hernandez in reference to the post – Sometimes You Have to Face Politics in the Classroom, Even in Kindergarten
Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights. As a former Kindergarten teacher myself this article really resonated with me. I’ve worked in both public and private school space and also taught at the higher ed level. And I agree with your perspective that teachers aren’t prepared.
What’s interesting for me is that my lived experiences as an early childhood educator filters through the following identities:
-male
-first in my family to go to college
-bicultural experience, Puerto Rican growing up in Lancaster, PA
-Democrat
-married with three children, one them adopted
-survivor of abuse
School spaces are tough to handle and yet can be brave places that both the adults and children can connect to their distinct identities, explore difference and support one another.
