This comment was by Susan Bernardo in reference to the post – Can Heavy Metal Music Be Therapy for Kids?
Yes! My partner’s son is a huge fan of “death metal” – which scared and shocked me when I first listened to it. But then he explained how it actually soothed him, and made him feel less isolated when he started listening to it in his adolescence.
He is an incredibly kind and sweet kid, but adolescent angst/divorce/moving brought up a lot of anger and feeling isolated – the music gave him a sense that he was not alone in his feelings, and soothed him. He also started playing in a band, and that creativity was really a positive outlet for him, too.
Great article—interesting to see that research confirms what he’s told me. I have never cared for heavy metal music personally, but I understand the huge impact music can have on our emotional state – certain songs, like Billy Joel’s “Vienna” or SuperTramp’s “Logical Song” really resonate with me to this day and make me feel connected to something universal.
