You do understand that the whole point of the article was that women are forced to adapt to survive in our male-dominated society?
I hope you were joking when you said, “Adapt. This year I am taking an art class at university, it is predominantly filled with women (25 – five ratio women to men) approximately. Coming from classes with a 50 – 50 split, or 100% male, this was intimidating as f*ck. I remember the first two weeks there, my voice vanished, I was so clammy and nervous and scared. But I have been learning to work with them, and understand them, so I can fit in with them. ”
Exactly how many of those women came on to you? How many made inappropriate remarks or suggested that you join them for a date? If the ratio were 25 – five men to women I assure you that every one of those five women would have been approached by at least one male classmate. In a bad case, one of the male classmates would have decided that his advance being turned down was a challenge and violence against the offending woman would have been the result.
When women find themselves in the minority in a social or academic situation, it isn’t socially intimidating. It can be dangerous. Adapting to that means that men have to understand that they do not have the privilege or the right to demand anything from a woman.
If you were the only guy at a party would you be afraid of getting physically abused? A woman alone at an all male party is in a dangerous situation.
Sure, you shouldn’t go to an all-female party because it’s dangerous – oh, wait… that’s probably not true. Hmm. Well, the woman certainly should not go alone to an all guys party because that IS dangerous. See the difference? Is that a good thing in your opinion?
That’s all the article wants to get across. Women in our society live with the knowledge that they can become victims and be blamed for the crime.
It’s changing, but for now … it is how it is. Does that mean it sucks to be a woman? Seems to me it sucks more to be a man if men are so controlled by raging hormones that they have no say in how they interact with women. Must be terrible to be so helpless.
I bet, with some decades of adapting, men could learn to be civilized human beings and not revert to wild animals whenever a hormone burst hits! I believe you can do it! Men can learn to look at little girls without lusting. I just know you can!
