This comment by Kelly on the post Reading Is For Girls
I recently read about the importance of reading to kids as a parent, as they then associate the act of reading with love. Maybe if Dads are able to sit and read a book with their sons instead of kicking a football around? It’s got to start somewhere…
As an aside, I looked into getting a photo journalism book published and was told if it’s not about politics or sport it won’t sell – not ‘typically’ female interests. This is Australia, though. Also I don’t know of any male authors who have had to use a female pen name to get published (although i wouldn’t doubt their existence either, ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ is the closest that comes to mind).

Food for Thought:
Reading expands the mind, develops and enriches the imagination, teaches critical thinking and takes us on a shared but individual journey into other worlds and experiences. I say read to your kids from before they are born, then with, and never stop. Thoughts?

I started reading to my kid every night his bedtime story. For an entire year I had to relocate for work, so I would coordinate with the wife so she would have the same book I had available. I would read the book to my son via Skype. Now that we are in the same house again, I still read every night to him, or he reads to me now that he is older. This is a non-negotiable thing we have.
Reading is the best gift anyone can give their kids or an kid. Read to them before they are born and then after, every night until they start reading on their own and even after that as a treat, if they want. Reading broadens the mind, stimulates the imagination, promotes critical thinking, expands social and human horizons and bridges gaps in knowledge and understanding of different, separate and foreign. It promotes self sufficiency and allows one to be part of something bigger as well as part of the whole. Read to your kids = love.
