This comment by Farrah on the post Police Officer Shoots Restrained, Compliant Teen: Why Cops Should Not Be First Responders in Mental Health Crises.
Irrelevant is how they [police] are “trained” to shoot to kill if someone is “armed” and taking a step towards them. seriously?? Time for them to be re-trained in restraint training. I could understand if this young man had a gun aimed at their heads. But a screwdriver? A 90 pound boy?????? You’re telling me they aren’t trained at taking people down with less than a gunshot? Shit, I have more training than that working at a youth detention center!!
I’m having a real hard time having sympathy for the officer who shot this boy. I hope he can’t get his face out of his head. IT SHOULD HAUNT HIM FOREVER!! I hope his paper work never ends. I hope he gets jail time. He had absolutely no right to fire his weapon. ESPECIALLY in the 70 seconds it took him to make that terrible, terrible decision.

Question of the day:
Should police procedure mandate De-escalation and outline appropriate viable options for dealing with “armed” person, making shoot to kill last resort?
