Looking past motion controls and further into the future, a recently discovered Microsoft patent shows that work has been started on a gaming focused helmet that will use lasers to project an image in front of the eyes. With the natural human eye being unable to focus on an image that's less than a few centimeters away, Microsoft has proposed a compact optical arrangement to compensate. According to the wording of the patent in the device's current state, it will project a 21" image at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The patent also states that the images could be made partially transparent, allowing for augmented reality interfaces, which sounds a bit similar to the rumored Google glasses that will be on sale by the end of this year.
Hopefully the games that will use this will not use motion controls, or Kinect Sports' Track event will lead to people running head first into the walls in their room.
